HAIR POROSITY 101

Did you know that your hair products may not be working because they’re not meant for your hair porosity? We’re breaking down everything you need to know about hair porosity: what it is, how to determine yours, and how to properly care for your hair!

WHAT IS HAIR POROSITY?

Hair porosity refers to how well your hair strands absorb and retain moisture. There are three hair porosity types: low, normal, and high.

HOW TO DETERMINE HAIR POROSITY

A popular technique for determining hair porosity is the FLOAT TEST!

LOW POROSITY HAIR

If your hair has low porosity, this means it is harder for moisture to penetrate your hair shaft, causing it to dry out easily. Low porosity hair is also more prone to product buildup, since strands can’t absorb the product as well as higher porosity hair. We recommend treating hair with a light hair oil to ultra-nourish your hair and give it the moisture it needs!

NORMAL POROSITY HAIR

If your hair has normal porosity, it doesn’t have a problem with retaining moisture! Most hair products will work well with normal porosity hair. Lucky for you, normal porosity hair doesn’t need much maintenance!

HIGH POROSITY HAIR

High porosity hair is great at accepting moisture, but has a hard time retaining it due to the open cuticle. Those with high porosity hair may benefit from using heavier treatments such as shea butter, castor oil, and cocoa butter.
